Water & Sludge Removal

How Water & Sludge End Up In Your Tank

Water and sludge can damage not only your oil tank, but also the fuel supplies and equipment that runs on your oil tank. It’s important to understand where water and sludge come from so that you have a better idea of the state of your tank and can call South West Oil Tanks for removal services.

Water

There are two main culprits behind water infiltration in your tank: condensation and rainwater. Condensation occurs when the inside of your tank is cooler than the outside, which can happen during spring and summer. Cool water vapour produces droplets that cling to the sides of the tank and eventually settle towards the bottom.

An older, more worn tank that is compromised can have rainwater seep inside. This tends to happen with oil tanks that have holes, cracks, poor seals, damaged vents and other issues.

Sludge

Sludge is more likely to occur if water contamination has occurred. This is usually a by-product of rust, dirt or oxidation of the oil’s hydrocarbons. Bacteria/microorganism growth from water can also eventually lead to sludge in the bottom of the tank.
